PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team got goals from six different players and contributions from several reserves in a 6-0 shutout victory over Brooklyn College Monday night at GoValiants.com Field.
Five days after posting six goals on 31 total shots, 19 of them on goal against St. Joseph's of Brooklyn, the Valiants (4-5) showed a more precise attack against the Bears (2-5-2), recording just nine shots on goal (18 total), but scored on 66.6% of them.
Senior
Eddy Garcia (Frederick, Md./Urbana) got the scoring started in the 30th minute, taking a lead header from freshman
Jon Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y./Pleasantville) off a free kick by fellow senior
Jeff Carreira (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and knocking it home right by the left post; it was Garcia's first goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, after Kyriakidis was taken down inside the box, Carreira buried a penalty kick past Brooklyn goalkeeper Utku Tanritanir for a 2-0 lead that the Valiants took to the half.
Manhattanville didn't waste much time putting the game out of reach in the second half, scoring on three of their first five shots for a 5-0 lead. Sophomore
Cristian Araujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) knocked home a cross from senior
Ryan Trainor (North Salem, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) inside the six yard box in the 48th minute. Senior
Jeff Santos (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) scored for the second time in the last three matches less than two minutes later. Garcia's ball into the box bounced off the crossbar and dropped down only a few feet in front of the goal line, where an uncovered Santos tapped it home. Kyriakidis joined the scoring onslaught exactly 53 minutes in, ripping a shot that bounced off the right post and crossed the entire goal, settling just inside the left post for his fourth goal of the season. Junior
Jack Balasiano (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) added the final mark of the night in the 79th minute with a shot from the top of the box tucked just inside the left post for his third goal of the season.
A diving save from senior goalkeeper
James McTighe (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), seeing his first action of the season, in the 88th minute saved the shutout for the Valiants, who improved to 3-0 at home this season, and pushed their home winning streak to five dating back to last season.
Manhattanville will kick off MAC Freedom Conference play on GoValiants.Com Field Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against the defending conference champions, Eastern University.
