Mackey's 19 Kills and Six Blocks Help Women's Volleyball Outlast Misericordia in Five Sets

DALLAS, Pa. – Senior Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) had a huge match with 19 kills and six blocks to lead the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team to a 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 22-25, 17-15) victory over Misericordia University in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.

Mackey was the best player on the court on Wednesday, as she put down 19 balls with just one error for a stellar .419 hitting percentage and also tied her career high with six blocks, which she had done on three previous occasions. With her 19 kills, Mackey moved past Susy Camaj '14 into second place on the school's all-time kills list and sits just 38 away from the top spot, while she also moved into eighth place in career blocks as well.

The win is very important for Manhattanville (10-3, 2-1 MAC Freedom), which wins its fourth match in a row and moves into a four-way tie for second place in the conference standings with Eastern University, FDU-Florham and King's (Pa.) College.

In addition to Mackey, classsmates Asia-Morgohn Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton) and Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) both played well offensively with nine kills apiece, with Dattoma also adding 12 digs and five aces. Freshman AnnaMaria Evers (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) stepped up in the setter's role once again and delivered a season-high 38 assists as well, while classmate Monica Lopez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) recorded a match-high 26 digs. Sophomore Austen Brauer (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) chipped in two kills and two blocks and freshman Leslie Morales (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) added nine digs as well in a total team effort.

The match came down to a decisive fifth set and the Valiants looked good early, leading 8-4 at the switch before eight of the next nine points went Misericordia's way to put the home team up 12-9. Three Valiant points tied the score, and it was tied at 13-all and 14-all after a Cougar error on match point kept the Valiants alive. Manhattanville staved off another match point thanks to a service error before a huge kill from freshman Keisha Schutte (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell) gave the visitors their first match point at 16-15. The Valiant front line came up large again in the situation, as Reid and Schutte stuffed a Tara Welliver attack for the team's ninth and final block of the night to secure the win.

After struggling through the opening set, the Valiant attack woke up in the second and third frames, combining for 21 kills and only three errors. The visitors led by as many as 10 points in the second stanza, and then did not make an error in the third frame to take a 2-1 lead.

For the match, Manhattanville hit .168 with 45 kills and 18 errors on 161 attacks, and also recorded 12 aces in the win.

Manhattanville will take the weekend off from competition before returning to play on Tuesday with another MAC Freedom matchup against perennial conference favorite Eastern beginning at 7 p.m. at Kennedy Gym.
