Women's Volleyball Wins Third in a Row with Sweep of Merchant Marine

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Asia-Morgohn Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton) led a balanced offensive attack with a team-high 10 kills as the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team won its third straight match with a 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-20) sweep of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in non-conference action on Wednesday night at Kennedy Gym.

Many players had a good match for Manhattanville (3-1), which beat Merchant Marine (3-1) for the second time in three years after winning two of the previous 22 meetings. Reid put down a team-high 10 kills on .350 hitting, followed by senior Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) with eight kills and 10 digs, while junior Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) added five kills, 11 digs, three assists and three aces. Freshman Ari Ramos (Commerce, Calif./El Rancho) came one dig from a double-double with 31 assists and nine digs to go with two kills, while classmate Monica Lopez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) led the team with 19 digs and four aces as well.

Dominique Pope registered a match-high 15 kills for the Mariners and added 13 digs for one of the match's two double-doubles. Kyleigh Kappas also added 20 assists and 13 digs for the visitors as well.

Manhattanville scored the first point of the match on a Ramos dump kill and never relinquished the lead in the opening set. LiVolsi, Reid and Dattoma all netted three kills apiece in the set.

The middle stanza was by far the most competitive, featuring eight ties and three lead changes.  USMMA led by as many as five points (15-10) after a 6-0 run put the visitors ahead, but the Valiants battled back to knot the score at 16. Down 19-17, senior Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) had a kill and an ace and Reid followed with a pair of kills to swing the momentum the way of the Valiants. The Mariners fought off three set points to tie the score at 24, but a Dattoma kill and a Lopez ace finally finished off the frame.

Manhattanville jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the third set and never were in serious danger after that, as the senior trio of Mackey, Dattoma and Reid all had three kills each to help secure the victory.

For the evening, the Valiants put down 37 kills and hit .174, making only 16 errors in 121 attempts. Merchant Marine recorded 29 kills and hit .066 for the three sets.

The Valiants will continue their challenging early-season schedule with two more 2016 NCAA Tournament teams on Saturday, when the squad faces off with Farmingdale State College and Ramapo College at the Farmingdale Tri-Match.
