Men's Basketball Surges Past Delaware Valley for First MAC Freedom Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore JoJo Cobbs (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) led four Valiants in double figures with a game-high 21 points as the Manhattanville College men's basketball team outscored Delaware Valley University by 11 points in the second half to secure a 67-63 win in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday night at Kennedy Gym.

Cobbs led all scorers with his 21 points, but he was one of many contributors to Manhattanville's first conference win of the year. Senior Alex Tuci (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) came one rebound short of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards, while both senior Dom Arena (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and freshman Sean Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart) added 10 points apiece as well.

The second half was the difference for Manhattanville (7-9, 1-4 MAC Freedom), as the Valiants dissolved a deficit that grew to as many as 13 points after a Willie-Britton layup put Delaware Valley (2-14, 0-5 MAC Freedom) up 40-27 with 1:48 gone by in the half. But the home team stormed back with a 15-5 run over the next 4:49 to get within three, with Cobbs scoring eight points and Smith adding five during the run.

Manhattanville stayed within one possession until a three from Cobbs put the Valiants back in front by a 54-52 score with 9:26 to go. DelVal knotted the score twice but the Valiants responded each time, and held the Aggies without a field goal for 4:42 down the stretch until a meaningless three-pointer with three seconds left. The Valiants, meanwhile, hit 6-of-8 free throws over the final 3:45 to seal the win.

The Valiants shot 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) from the charity stripe and 11-of-25 (44.0 percent) from the floor in the second half to secure the victory. The home team also converted 10 DelVal turnovers into 14 points over the final 20 minutes, helping the squad to a decisive 23-6 edge in points off turnovers for the game.

Arena scored the first basket of the night and Manhattanville led 13:07 of the contest before an 8-0 run put the Aggies ahead for the first time after a pair of Damian Washington threes. The Aggies finished the first half on a 24-11 run to take a 34-27 lead into the half, but the Valiants outplayed the Aggies over the final 20 minutes to earn a crucial conference win.

Manhattanville will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday, when the Valiants travel to Eastern University for a 3 p.m. tipoff with the Eagles.
