PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team shot 51.8% from the floor and out-rebounded Delaware Valley 51-26 en route to a 75-47 in MAC Freedom play Wednesday night at Kennedy Gymnasium.
Four days removed from a 28.8% effort from the floor against King's (Pa.) in their first loss in two months, the Valiants responded with one of their best shooting performances of the season.
Freshman
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) led four Valiants in double figures with a game-high 16 points and a season-high nine rebounds while classmates
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and
Amanda Pemberton (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) added 13 and 12, respectively. Sophomore
Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) posted her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds while shooting better than 60% from the floor for the fifth time in the last six games.
Manhattanville (12-2, 3-1 MACF) maintained a two-possession lead throughout most of the opening 10 minutes, with Coutu scoring six to lead all players, as the Valiants took a 15-11 lead to the second quarter.
With Delaware Valley (5-11, 2-3 MACF) keeping things close throughout the first 3:30 of the second quarter, the Valiants finally broke free, scoring eight straight points, all on layups over a 2:30 span, for a 12-point lead. The Valiants finished the quarter on a 16-6 run and entered the half with a 37-23 lead.
The two teams traded baskets back and forth over the first 90 seconds of the second half before Manhattanville went on a 9-2 spurt, led by five points from Shore, to push its lead to 20. The Aggies managed to cut into the deficit a little bit, but the Valiants took a 55-39 lead to the fourth quarter.
A layup by senior
Sam Milazzo (Bellmore, N.Y./John F Kennedy) and a jumper from junior
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) ignited an 11-0 Manhattanville run to start the fourth as the Valiants pushed their lead to 27. The Aggies didn't draw closer than 23 the rest of the game.
McGuire, who played only two minutes in the first half with foul trouble, finished with eight points, while Milazzo, who gave key minutes while McGuire sat in the first half, also had eight. For Delaware Valley, Ashley Smink finished with 13 points while Monika Smallwood added 10.
Manhattanville continues MACF Freedom play this weekend on the road against Eastern, with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 pm.
