Another Late Lead Lost as Men's Hockey Skates to 4-4 Tie with Neumann

ASTON, Pa. – For the second straight game, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team was unable to hold a two-goal lead in the third period, as the Valiants again settled for a 4-4 (OT) tie with Neumann University in United Collegiate Hockey Conference action on Friday night at Ice Works.

Sophomore Ryan Jackson (Montreal, Que./Hawkesbury Hawks (CCHL)) led the Valiant attack with a pair of goals from the blue line. Junior Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ont./Oakville Blades (OJHL)) had two points with a goal and an assist, while freshman Taylor Bommarito (Sterling Heights, Mich./Charlotte Rush (USPHL)) scored as well for Manhattanville (8-6-5, 5-3-2 UCHC), which currently sits in a three-way tie for fourth place with six conference games left.

The Valiants battled back after a slow start, as Neumann (5-12-2, 5-4-2 UCHC) scored twice on its first four shots of the game to take a 2-0 lead 5:03 into the opening period. After that point, however, Manhattanville outshot Neumann by a 16-2 margin over the final 14:57 of the period, eventually getting within one thanks to Lippa's team-leading 10th goal of the year with 4:33 remaining.

The visitors scored the only two goals of the middle stanza, finding the net twice on the power play to take their first lead of the night. Bommarito knotted the score at the 6:37 mark with his eighth of the year, while Jackson scored his first of the night with 5:16 left in the period.

Jackson seemed to put the Valiants in excellent position after his second of the game gave Manhattanville a 4-2 lead at 9:25 of the third period. However, Neumann came back with one goal 68 seconds later and another 1:31 after that to tie the score.

The Valiant penalty kill came up big down the stretch, killing off three penalties, including 60 seconds of five-on-three power play as well as two minutes of man-down time in overtime. Manhattanville kept Neumann off the scoreboard in seven man-up situations, while the Valiant power play went 2-for-8 on the night.

Manhattanville finished the game with a 39-34 edge in shots. Senior Kyle Redmond (Toronto, Ont./Northfield Mount Hermon) got the start and made 30 saves in the tie, including 21 stops in the second and third periods. Matt Glbney made 35 saves for Neumann.

The Valiants are back in action tomorrow night, when the team travels south for a big UCHC and Middle Atlantic Conference clash with Stevenson University beginning at 7 p.m.
