Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Affair to King's

PURCHASE, NY – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team dropped an overtime heartbreaker to the King's Lady Monarchs Saturday afternoon in a matchup between two of the top three teams in the MAC Freedom entering the day, falling 65-62, on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gym.

With King's (11-8, 6-2 MACF) down one in the closing seconds, a foul call on junior Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) with 0.1 seconds remaining sent Rebecca Prociak to the foul line for two shots with a chance to win the game. After missing the first, Prociak drained the second to send the game to overtime.

King's then scored the first 10 points of the extra session, but Manhattanville (14-3, 5-2 MACF) stormed back on the strength of two-three pointers by freshman Amanda Pemberton (Henderson, Nev./Liberty), her first two threes of the season, and one from freshman Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) that closed the gap to 64-62 with four seconds left to play.

After Alexis Steeber went 1-for-2 from the foul line, sophomore Kymane Jones (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville ) had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but her shot from just inside mid-court, bounced off the right side of the rim.

Eight different Valiants scored at least six points, led by McGuire with 11 and Pemberton with 10. Sophomore Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Valiants as well.

Two weeks after utilizing a 17-3 edge in free throws made to end the Valiants' 10-game winning streak down in Wilkes-Barre, King's again took advantage of repeated trips to the foul line, making 17 of 31 attempts, including a 10-for-14 mark from Prociak; as a team, Manhattanville finished the game 8-for-17 from the charity stripe.

The two teams traded the lead several times in the opening 3:30 before five straight points from Lindsey Dippre gave King's a 13-9 lead and started an eventual 17-6 run that gave the Monarchs a 25-15 lead at the 6:54 mark of the second quarter. The Valiants responded with a 14-7 stretch run to close the deficit to 32-29 at the half. A low-scoring third quarter ended with King's maintaining their three-point lead, 41-38, heading to the fourth quarter.

King's led by as many as five in the final quarter, but Manhattanville kept the game within one-possession over the final 5:13 and took a 53-52 lead on a three-pointer by Shore with 1:06 to play, the final points before the last-second foul call.

The Valiants return to action Monday at 6:00 in a non-conference game against Keystone, a game originally scheduled for December, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
