NEW YORK, NY – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team continued its relentless defense against the Bloodhounds of John Jay College Monday night at The Doghouse, leading wire-to-wire, winning by a score of 72-32.
Allowing just 44.9 points per game and a 26.7 field goal percentage entering the contest, the Valiants held the Bloodhounds to 21.6% from the field while out-rebounding John Jay (0-13) 47-30.
Junior
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while freshman
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) and sophomore
Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Coutu added a game-high five steals while Caballero finished 5-for-5 from the field, extending her streak of consecutive field goals without a miss to 12.
Manhattanville (10-1) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never trailed by less than five, thanks in part to seven steals and a 61.1% field goal percentage in the first quarter. McGuire, who surpassed the 400-rebound plateau during the game, outscored John Jay by herself (9-8) in the opening 10 minutes.
Just like they had done in the first, Manhattanville scored the first eight points of the second quarter, including four from freshman
Jykayla Elting (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), and quickly pushed its advantage above the 30-point mark, taking a 47-14 lead to the locker room.
In the second half, Manhattanville led by as many as 50 before John Jay scored 15 of the game's final 20 points. Jessica Gorman led the Bloodhounds with a game-high 16 points.
For Manhattanville, senior
Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) stuffed the stat sheet with five points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
The Valiants return to MAC Freedom play Wednesday night at home against DeSales. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm, following the conclusion of the men's game scheduled to tip at 6:00 pm.
