Men's Soccer Earns Crucial MAC Freedom Road Win Against FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team earned its first road win at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham since 2012 on Wednesday Oct. 17, knocking off the Devils 3-1, remaining in the thick of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Tournament hunt.

Freshman Cody LaCava (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) registered a goal and an assist for Manhattanville (10-4, 3-2 MACF), junior Cristian Araujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) scored his team-best seventh goal of the season, and sophomore Marius Nicolaysen (Oslo, Norway/Kongshavn VGS) moved into sole possession of second on the team in goals with his fifth of the year. Billy Farnan scored in the 87th minute for FDU-Florham (5-9, 2-3 MACF).

The teams played to a scoreless first half, despite a 13-5 shot advantage and 3-1 corner kick advantage for the Valiants; FDU-Florham goalkeeper Tiernan Gray saved all five shots on goal from Manhattanville.

Right at the start of the 61st minute of play, and less than a minute after an FDU-Florham shot hit the crossbar, Araujo opened the scoring with a shot from in close off assists from freshman Brad Bischoff (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and sophomore Pablo Bravo Olle (Barcelona, Spain/LFG Bon Soleil). Three minutes and one second later, Nicolaysen made it 2-0, one-timing a cross from LaCava into the back of the net.

Following almost 20 scoreless minutes, LaCava made it 3-0 with a strike from well outside the box, over the outstretched arms of Gray and under the crossbar. Farnan's late goal kept the Valiants from posting their eighth shutout of the season.

Manhattanville entered the day in a four-way tie for third place in the MAC Freedom, with all remaining regular season matches against the other three teams. Manhattanville remained in control of its own MAC Freedom Tournament destiny with the win. The victory was also Manhattanville's sixth road win of the season, the most in a single-season by the program since the 2009 team won on the road six times.

The Valiants hit the road again on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against the Wilkes University Colonels.
