RYE, N.Y. – Senior
Bryan Platt (Trumbull, Conn./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) and junior
Kenny McLean (New Rochelle, N.Y./New York Bobcats (EHL)) both had a goal and an assist for the Manhattanville College men's hockey team Saturday, Nov. 10, in a 6-2 win in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play against the Elmira College Soaring Eagles from Playland Ice Casino.
Six different Valiants scored a goal and 11 recorded at least one point in Manhattanville's first win of the year (1-1-2, 1-1-2 UCHC). Seniors
Cory Anderson (Bakersfield, Calif./Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) and
Marco Ferraro (Toronto, Ont./St. Michael's Buzzers (OJHL)) each recorded their second goals of the season, while freshman
Jarod Lavallee (Cumberland, Maine/Seacoast Spartans (ECEL)) recorded his first collegiate goal and classmate
Niko Happo (Kauniainen, Finland/Grankulla IFK Hockey Club (FIHA)) added his second of the year. Seniors
Casper Dyrssen (Stockholm, Sweden/Northern Cyclones (EHL)) and
Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ont./Oakville Blades (OJHL)) each recorded two assists as well for Manhattanville. Aleksi Ojala and Anthony Parrucci both scored for Elmira (4-3, 3-1 UCHC). Manhattanville sophomore goalie
Mac Vail (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers (EHL)), making his first collegiate start, stopped 21 of Elmira's 23 shots.
Lavallee scored the first goal of the game off assists from senior Swedes Dyrssen and Axel Waltott. Vail made several outstanding saves off shots from point-blank range to keep the Soaring Eagles grounded in the opening period.
Ojala tied the game just past the midway point of the second period, but Platt put the Valiants back in front just over three minutes later off an assist from junior
Joel Knight (Stoney Creak, Ont./Markham Royals (OJHL)). Just under three minutes later, on the power play, McLean scored off assists from Lippa and senior
Eric Berglund (Sollentuna, Sweden/Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL)), as the Valiants took their 3-1 lead to the third period.
After no goals through the first 10+ minutes of the final period, Happo, Ferraro (on the power play), and Anderson all scored in a 6:32 span to blow the game wide open; Parrucci scored on the power play inside the final two minutes, but it wasn't enough for the Soaring Eagles, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Manhattanville finished with a 36-23 shot advantage.
The Valiants' six-game, season-opening UCHC stretch continues on the road Friday, Nov. 16 with a 7 p.m. opening face-off against UCHC and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) foe, the Stevenson University Mustangs.
