Women's Basketball Rides Efficient Offense, Dominating Defense to 47-Point Win

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) posted her first double-double of the season, recording season highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds, one of four Valiants with 10 or more points, as the Manhattanville College women's basketball team shot 65.7 percent from the field in a 97-50 win over the Baruch College Bearcats Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Sophomore Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) had 17 points while freshmen Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) and Faith Johnson-DeSilvia added 14 and 10 respectively, joining McGuire in double figures for Manhattanville (4-0). The four outscored Baruch (1-2) as a whole 60-50 while shooting a combined 77.1 percent. Melinda Spahiu had a game-high 20 points for Baruch (1-2).

McGuire and Coutu got the Valiants going early on, combining for 17 of their 21 first quarter points, while the defense forced six Bearcat turnovers in the first 10 minutes. After just two points in the first quarter, Mikaele went off in the second, scoring 10 points while making all five of her shots from the floor. The Valiants ended the half with a 48-27 lead, thanks to a 9-0 run capped by back-to-back baskets from sophomore Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty).

The third quarter was a balanced affair offensively and a dominant team effort defensively. McGuire, Johnson-DeSilvia, Coutu, and freshman Jada Rencher (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham High School) each had at least four points, while the defense forced eight turnovers and held Baruch to just five points, keeping them off the scoreboard for the final 6:51 of the quarter.

Sophomore Jykayla Elting (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) set a new season-high with seven points in the fourth quarter alone, while classmate Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) added four of her own, also giving her seven for the game. The Valiants briefly led by 50 in the final quarter en route to their greatest offensive output since their 2011-12 season opener against William Paterson, a span of more than 175 games.

Manhattanville returns to Kennedy Gymnasium at 6 p.m. for a non-conference contest with the Blue Angels from the nearby College of New Rochelle.
