PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior
JoJo Cobbs (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) turned in another impressive offensive performance, but it was not enough as the Manhattanville College men's basketball team dropped an 85-73 non-conference affair to the #8 Ephs on Saturday afternoon from Kennedy Gymnasium.
Cobbs scored 22 points shooting 53.3 percent from the field, his third straight game with 20 or more points and a 50 percent or better field goal percentage for Manhattanville (3-2). Kyle Scadlock had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the game's lone double-double for Williams (4-0). Scadlock was one of five Ephs in double figures. Williams made 53 percent of its shots, a season-best for Valiants opponents.
Williams held a lead between three and six points throughout the early going. Sophomore
Sean Smith, Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart) made two free throws for Manhattanville at 12:49 to make it 15-11 in favor of Williams, but the Ephs responded with a 15-4 run, opening a 30-15 lead with 8:14 to play. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half with Williams' lead fluctuating between 12 and 18 points. The Valiants closed to within 46-34 with under 10 seconds, but five points in six seconds for Williams gave them a 51-34 lead at the half.
Williams eventually opened a 62-36 lead with 16:29 left in regulation before the Valiants answered with a 19-7 spurt that closed the lead to 69-55. Manhattanville made it as close as 13 points on three separate occasions, but drew no closer until Cobbs scored his final points of the afternoon with a lay-up for the game's final basket.
Smith Jr. finished with 11 points while fellow sophomore
Mike Granda (Monroe Township, N.J./St. Joseph) reached double figures for the fourth straight game with 10 points. The Valiants return to the court on the road Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Battle for Anderson Hill Road against the Purchase Panthers.
