BOSTON, MASS. — The Manhattanville College women's hockey team continued its strong play to start the season, as the Valiants extended their win streak to three games following a 4-0 victory over Bowdoin College Saturday, Nov. 24 in the first round of the 12th annual Codfish Bowl Invitational.
The Valiants got off to a fast start, as junior
Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season, assisted by sophomore
Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)), just three minutes into the first period to give Manhattanville a 1-0 lead. Just past the midway point of the first, Lopes scored her second of the season with Sabia this time providing the assist, giving the Valiants a two goal edge heading into the first intermission.
Following a scoreless second period, Manhattanville would pull away in the third. Bowdoin scored what was initially ruled a goal, but the score was disallowed due to the Polar Bears having too many players on the ice. Minutes later, Lopes would break the game open by scoring her second goal of the game and third of the season on a backhand shot that beat Bowdoin goaltender Kerri St. Denis to extend the Valiants' lead to three. Following a Bowdoin penalty in the final minutes, senior
Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Northwood School) fired a wrist shot from the slot that beat St. Denis and gave the Valiants a 4-0 lead.
Sabia and Lopes both had three-point nights for Manhattanville, with Sabia scoring one goal and two assists while Lopes added two goals and one helper. Freshman
Erica Sandilands (Winnipeg, Man./Balmoral Hall Blaze (JWHL)) and sophomore
Janet Xu (Edmonton, Alta./Ontario Hockey Academy) each had one assist on the afternoon.
The Valiants' penalty killing continued to be a strength for the team, going 5-for-5 on the afternoon and improving to 91.7 percent on the season.
Senior goaltender
Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) picked up the victory, making 25 saves and recording her first shutout of the season and sixth of her career, tying her for ninth on the Valiants' all-time list.
The Valiants return to action Sunday when they take on Wesleyan University in the Codfish Bowl Championship Game, with puck drop scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
