REISTERSTOWN, MD. — Following a 6-2 victory over the Mustangs Friday night, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team played to a 3-3 tie in Game Two of the weekend series at Stevenson University Saturday, Nov. 3.
The two teams traded opportunities throughout the first period with neither team able to break through until the final minute. Following an offensive zone faceoff win, junior
Ali Howard (Rye, N.Y./Rye) took an initial shot that was stopped by Stevenson goaltender Annie Smyth-Hammond, but the rebound came out into the slot and Howard fired a shot that beat Smyth-Hammond glove-side with seven seconds remaining to give the Valiants a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Manhattanville kept up the offense in the second, as just prior to the midway point of the period, junior
Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery) sent a pass across on a two-on-one that deflected off a Stevenson player's skate and into the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
Stevenson would answer back shortly after, as the Mustangs' Kellen Wittman took the puck to net on a delayed penalty and was able to get it past Manhattanville goaltender
Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) to get Stevenson on the board and cut the lead to 2-1. Just moments after the goal, the Mustangs had a chance to tie the game when Jordan Pirrello had a breakaway opportunity on the ensuing power play, but Pijaca was able to come up with a big save to keep the Valiants in front heading into the third period.
Stevenson would get the equalizing goal early in the third, as Pijaca made a save on an initial shot, but Nikki Kendrick was able to put in the rebound to tie the game at two.
The Mustangs would keep up the offense and take the lead midway through the third, as Kellen Wittman got her second of the night on a sharp angle shot that found its way past Pijaca to give Stevenson its first lead of the game.
With time running out and the Valiants still trailing 3-2, the team would answer in the game's final minutes. Following an offensive zone faceoff win, junior
Janet Xu (Edmonton, Alta./Ontario Hockey Academy) sent a perfect cross-ice pass to senior
Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Northwood School), who would fire the puck into the net to tie the game with just over three minutes to go.
Neither team was able to come up with the winning goal in the final minutes, sending them to a five-minute overtime. The Valiants had a number of opportunities in the extra period, outshooting the Mustangs 4-1, but were unable to come up with the game-winner, resulting in the game ending in a 3-3 tie.
The Valiants as a team outshot the Mustangs 43-25, with Pijaca making 22 saves for Manhattanville. The team also continued its strong special teams play to start the season, going 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Valiants' record now stands at 1-0-1, and will return to action in their home opener Nov. 16 versus King's College (Pa.), with gametime scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
