Men's Hockey Puts on Dominating Performance in Victory Over King's

RYE, N.Y. — The Manhattanville College men's hockey team got back on the winning track today, as they put on a strong performance in a 9-1 victory over King's College (Pa.) Saturday, Dec. 1 at Playland Ice Casino.

The Valiants had many opportunities in the first period, registering 17 shots on goal, but were unable to break through until the final minute of the period when freshman forward Alex Rowella (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) picked up the first goal of the game on the power play, with assists coming from senior defender Marco Ferraro (Toronto, Ont./St. Michael's Buzzers (OJHL)) and senior forward Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ont./Oakville Blades (OJHL)) to give the Valiants a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Manhattanville then exploded for seven goals in the second period, starting with senior forward Casper Dyrssen (Stockholm, Sweden/Northern Cyclones (EHL)) scoring his third goal of the season off assists from sophomore defender Tristan Ramage (Pittsburgh, Pa./Philadelphia Flyers (USPHL)) and senior forward Nigel Slade (St. Catherines, Ont./Niagara Falls Canucks (GOJHL)) at 2:19 to push the lead to 2-0. Just over two minutes later, the Valiants picked up their third goal, with freshman forward Niko Happo (Kauniainen, Finland/Grankulla IFK Hockey Club (FIHA)) also picking up his third of the year, with junior defender Ryan Jackson (Montreal, Que./Hawkesbury Hawks (CCHL)) and senior forward Bryan Platt (Trumbull, Conn./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) providing the assists. Following a King's penalty, Lippa scored the first of his two goals on the afternoon from Ferraro and senior defender Oscar Arfelt (Stockholm, Sweden/Connecticut Oilers (EHL)), making it a four goal lead for Manhattanville.

Rowella then notched his second of the afternoon, with Arfelt and Ferraro again providing the helpers, to stretch the lead to five. Sophomore forward Braeden Cross (Sechelt, B.C./Cochrane Crunch (CJHL)) followed up with a goal less than a minute later to extend the lead to 6-0, with Ferraro and Arfelt providing the assists for the third time in a row. Moments after Cross scored, junior forward Kenny McLean (New Rochelle, N.Y./New York Bobcats (EHL)) made it 7-0 with his second goal of the year, with Dyrssen this time providing the assist. Senior defender Axel Walltott (Stockholm, Sweden/Varmdo HC J20 (SWE)) scored the Valiants' fourth goal in a 3:10 span, coming from Arfelt and Lippa, to give the Valiants an eight goal lead at the end of the second.

In the third, following a pair of penalties that left the Valiants on a 5-on-3 penalty kill, King's was able to break through for their only goal, with Christian La Croix scoring to deny Manhattanville the shutout. Minutes later, Lippa would score his second of the game to extend the lead back to eight goals, with Ferraro providing the assist to put the Valiants ahead 9-1.

Senior goaltender Tyler Feaver (Whitby, Ont./Whitby Fury (OJHL)) picked up the victory for Manhattanville, making 23 saves and recording his first win of the season.

On the day, 13 Valiants registered at least one point, with five players having multi-point games. Ferraro had five assists in the game, with Arfelt providing four helpers as well. Lippa had two goals and two assists, Dyrssen had one goal and one assist, and Rowella scored twice in the first multi-goal game of his career.

Manhattanville dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 61 percent of the draws, and the special teams stood out as well. The team scored two power play goals and went 5-for-6 on the penalty kill, with the 5-on-3 being the lone penalty not killed off.

The Valiants return to action Friday, Dec. 7, when they travel to Aston, Pa. to take on Neumann University, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
