HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team kicked off the
Jen Nardi era in historical fashion, scoring a program-record 27 goals in a 27-0 blanking of Centenary (N.J.) University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at J.E. Reeves Jr. Field.
For Manhattanville (1-0), 27 marks both the most goals scored in a game and the largest margin of victory in school history, breaking both previous records set in a 24-2 win over Centenary on April 27, 2003.
Senior
Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led 11 different Valiant scorers with a game-high six goals and nine points, in addition to three ground balls and three draw controls. Senior
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) and freshman
Melissa O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) both chipped in six goals and three assists apiece, with Nance adding two assists for seven points and O'Mara corralling a game-high 10 draw controls as well.
Nance opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the game, while junior
Diana Bajraktari (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) followed less than a minute later with her first of two goals on the day, the second multi-goal game of her career.
The trio of Weiss, O'Mara and Nance combined for Manhattanville's next nine goals, with all three players scoring three times before Bajraktari's second of the game with 19:29 left in the first half put the visitors up 12-0. Three more from Weiss, two each from Nance and O'Mara, and single tallies from senior
Christina Leva (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) and freshman
Hailey DeStasio (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) helped the Valiants to a 21-0 lead after 30 minutes of play.
Manhattanville eased up considerably in the second half, scoring just six times. Five different Valiants found the net in the second stanza, including the first collegiate goals of freshmen
Kayla Telesky (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville),
Bella Cosentino (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and
Grace D'Amico (Washington, Conn./The Gunnery).
For the game, Manhattanville posted a 56-4 edge in total shots. Sophomore
Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) made three saves to record the first full shutout by a Valiant goalie in school history; the previous two shutouts (2016, 2002) were both shared.
Manhattanville will return to action next Wednesday, when the Valiants welcome SUNY New Paltz to GoValiants.com Field for the team's 2018 home opener beginning at 4 p.m.
