Women's Basketball Remains in MAC Freedom Top Four With Road Win at Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Freshman Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) and sophomore Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) combined for 31 points as the Manhattanville College women's basketball team outscored Delaware Valley University 40-28 in the second half Wednesday night, winning 69-59 to remain in the thick of MAC Freedom Tournament contention.

Entering the night tied for fourth in the conference with DeSales and playing without its leading scorer and second-leading rebounder, junior Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers), Manhattanville (17-5, 7-4 MACF) received a huge boost from its reserves, finishing with a 25-0 advantage in bench points, 14 of which coming from Caballero.

Manhattanville grabbed a 12-5 lead with 2:46 remaining in the first quarter, but Delaware Valley (7-15, 4-7 MACF) scored seven of the quarter's final nine points, five from Ashley Smink.

The second quarter was a basket-trading affair, with the teams swapping the lead four times over a 90-second stretch. Smink finished the half with 16 points for the Lady Aggies, who took a 31-29 lead at the half.

Seniors Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) and Sam Milazzo (Bellmore, N.Y./John F Kennedy) scored back-to-back lay-ups for Manhattanville to open the second half to put the Valiants ahead. An additional four lead changes took place over the remainder of the period, which Manhattanville finished with an 8-0 run to grab a six-point lead heading to the fourth quarter.

The Lady Aggies closed the gap to 52-49 with just under six minutes to go, but that was as close as it got down the stretch as Manhattanville made seven of its final nine free throws to close out the win. Smink finished with a game-high 24 points for Delaware Valley

The Valiants will honor Milazzo and Darnell for Senior Day on Saturday at Kennedy Gymnasium, prior to a 1:00 p.m. tip-off against Eastern.
