Baseball Drops Road Game to Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – Junior Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) homered for the second straight day and the Valiants scored in each of the first four innings, but a 10-hit attack for Salisbury University was two much for the Manhattanville College baseball team on Sunday in a 12-6 Sea Gulls win.

Sophomore Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and senior Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) each drove in a run for Manhattanville and freshman Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) recorded a hit for the fourth straight game.

Graduate student Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) reached on an error leading off the game for Manhattanvile (2-3), then scored on a double by Scoggins. Gallagher then knocked in Scoggins with a single to right, and stole second to put himself in scoring position with one out. Sophomore Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) drew a two-out walk to put two runners on for Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), but the sophomore filed out to right center, ending the inning.

The Valiants pushed a run across in the top of the second without a hit, starting with sophomore Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), who was hit by a pitch, then stole second base. After Conklin and Scoggins both walked, all three advanced, Silvestri scoring, on a wild pitch with two outs.

In the bottom of the second, Salisbury (6-3) put four on the board, capped by a Jay Perry two-run homer. Iannarilli led off the Manhattanville fourth with a walk, then scored on a Merrill double to dead center. Merrill advanced to third on a sac bunt by Silvestri, but was stranded after a strikeout and ground out as the Valiants were unable to take back the lead.

After Salisbury put three more on the board in the bottom of the third, Scoggins launched a one-out shot over the right field wall in the Manhattanville fourth. Gallagher, after reaching on a passed ball and advancing to third on a Matero single, later scored on a Jack Cheney wild pitch as the Valiants cut the deficit back to one.

That was as close as Manhattanville got, as the Sea Gulls scored the final five runs of the game, breaking the game open with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Valiants are back in action on Tuesday afternoon on the road against Alvernia, with first pitch slated for 3:30.
