First-Half Run Too Much For Women's Lacrosse in Loss to Drew

MADISON, N.J. – An early-game run was too much to overcome for the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a 20-9 score to Drew University in non-conference action at Ranger Stadium.

Senior Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led Manhattanville (1-2) with five goals and one assist, in the process giving her an even 100 goals, 50 assists and 150 points in her three-year Valiant career; the midfielder ranks 10th in school history in both goals and points and fifth in assists after just 33 games. Classmate Christina Leva (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) also tied her career high with three goals, while fellow senior Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) scored once and chipped in three assists.

The two teams were evenly matched for much of the game, with Drew (4-2) only outshooting Manhattanville by a 32-25 margin and the Valiants on the right end of a 22-17 turnover margin. However, Ranger netminder Katiana Michalski made seven saves in 46:17 and Charlotte Grimm added three more stops to keep the Valiants at a distance.

The Valiants dug themselves an early hole, giving up 12 of the game's first 13 goals over the opening 17 minutes. Weiss scored twice from the eight-meter arc and Leva scored to put the visitors down 12-4 at the half, but the team could get no closer in the second stanza.

Manhattanville is slated to open its home schedule on Saturday, when the Valiants will host Elms College at 1 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field.
