Dominant First Half Keys Men's Lacrosse Win Over Rosemont

ROSEMONT, PA – Graduate student Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and sophomore T.J. Caccavo (Carlsbad, Calif./San Marcos) each scored in the final 12 seconds of the first quarter in a 10-4 win for the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon against Rosemont.

Manhattanville (5-1) scored twice in the opening three minutes and never looked back, taking a 7-0 at the half. Murray finished with three goals and an assist for a game-high four points, sophomore Gianni Ciffone (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and senior Christian Flores (Hartford, Conn./Avon) each added a pair of goals, and sophomore Nick Delia (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) added a goal and two assists. Ben Koszelak had two goals for Rosemont (0-5).

After Murray opened the scoring at 12:53, senior Tyler Bentrewicz (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) made it 2-0 just 36 seconds later. The teams combined for seven shots on goal over the next 12 minutes, with sophomore Jason Frezza (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Portledge) stopping three Raven shots and Mark Porter stopping four Valiant shots. Off a turnover, Murray made it 3-0 with 12 seconds left. On the ensuing face-off, Caccavo grabbed a ground ball, raced into the zone and made it 4-0 with one second left on the clock.

Ciffone made it 6-0 with two goals 10 seconds apart in the second quarter. After scoring on a delayed penalty from a Brandon Neff (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) assist, Ciffone took a feed from Murray on the ensuing restart and found the back of the net for the 18th time this season. Delia added the final goal of the half, unassisted, with 1:49 to go.

Koszelak put Rosemont on the board just past the midway point of the third quarter, beating freshman Mike McGrath (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), who had relieved Frezza at the start of the second quarter. After an additional three scoreless minutes, Flores scored two straight goals, one of which on a man-up opportunity, both off Delia assists.

The Ravens scored three times in the final period, but mustered just five shots on goal, while Murray gave the Valiants a goal in each quarter with his third score of the game at 6:47. Manhattanville finished with a 37-17 shot advantage, 21-12 in shots on goal.

The Valiants kick off a four-game home-stand on Wednesday, with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference affair with Mount St. Mary.
