Women's Lacrosse Falls Short in Comeback Effort at Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. – A second-half comeback came up two goals short for Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants dropped a 13-11 contest to Stockton University in non-conference women's lacrosse action at the Stockton Turf Field.

Freshman Melissa O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led all players with six points on four goals and two assists, while senior Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) matched O'Mara for the game-high with four tallies. Senior Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) added two goals and freshman Rosie DeBellis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) found the net once as well for Manhattanville (2-4).

The Valiants outscored the Ospreys 8-5 over the final 30 minutes, led by three goals apiece from Weiss and O'Mara. Down by five with 9:43 remaining, Manhattanville got three goals in less than three minutes and a draw control from freshman Madison Gneo (Ithaca, N.Y./Northwood School) regained possession for the visitors again, but an O'Mara shot rang off the crossbar and the home team scored on the subsequent possession.

Manhattanville could never fully overcome a slow start, as Stockton scored the first five goals of the game and held an 8-1 lead with 19:27 gone by in the first half. Two goals in 16 seconds from Weiss and O'Mara lowered the deficit to five at 8-3 headed into halftime.

For the game, Stockton held a slight 36-31 edge in shots. Junior Alex Breen (South Windsor, Conn./Kingswood Oxford School) turned aside 13 shots to keep the Valiants in the game.

Manhattanville is set to return to action on Tuesday, when the Valiants host Alvernia University at GoValiants.com Field beginning at 4 p.m.
