Feeney and Hartenstein Pitch Softball Past FDU-Florham in MAC Freedom Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team started its 2018 MAC Freedom schedule on Saturday afternoon, jumping out to an early lead in a 6-0 game-one win and then coming back late to complete the sweep of FDU-Florham with a 5-1 victory at Manhattanville Field.

Sophomore Sam Jedrey (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada) had a big day at the plate for Manhattanville (9-7, 2-0 MAC Freedom), going 4-for-6 with a homer, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Junior Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) and freshman Jordyn Boyd (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) both drove in a pair of runs as well on the day.

Game 1: Manhattanville 6, FDU-Florham 0

Senior Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) tossed a three-hit shutout and Jedrey had three hits to lead the Valiants to a 6-0 win in game one. The senior righthander struck out five and retired 17 in a row after a leadoff single to keep the Devils off the board.

Jedrey went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored in the win, while junior Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) drove in a run and scored once as well for the home team.

The Valiants struck early with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles from Hartenstein and Jedrey, which was more than enough for Feeney (6-4), who scattered three singles in earning her 50th career victory and 21st career shutout.

The Valiants added one run in the second and then got another in the fourth on a solo homer from Jedrey, before tacking on two more runs in the sixth on a passed ball and wild pitch.

Game 2: Manhattanville 5, FDU-Florham 1

Manhattanville staged a late-game comeback in game two, scoring once in the fifth and adding four in the sixth to secure the sweep. Boyd and Torres provided much of the offense from the bottom of the order, combining for four hits and four RBIs.

After three scoreless innings, the Devils struck first in the top of the fourth on an RBI double from Michelle Mangini. But Hartenstein was able to limit the damage, getting a strikeout and groundout with two runners in scoring position to end the frame.

Manhattanville finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, when Boyd delivered an RBI single through the left side to score graduate student Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and tie the game at one.

The Valiants then came through with four runs in the sixth to finally take the lead. After the first two batters were retired, Jedrey continued the inning with a single and, after senior pinch-runner Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) moved to second on a wild pitch, Diemicke delivered a RBI base hit up the middle to put the home team ahead. Manhattanville added three more in the inning thanks to a two-run double by Torres and another run-scoring single by Boyd.

Feeney then came on for the seventh, striking out two batters to finish off the win. Hartenstein (3-3) earned the win for the Valiants, striking out eight and allowing one run on five hits in six innings.

Manhattanville returns to action on Wednesday, when the Valiants host New York University for two games at Manhattanville Field beginning at 3 p.m.
