PURCHASE, NY – Seniors
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) and
Austin Pollack (Harrison, N.Y./) combined for four runs scored and totaled five hits as the Manhattanville College men's baseball team scored three runs in both the first and third innings in a 7-4 win over John Jay at Manhattanville Field in a shortened, non-conference affair.
The game, moved up from Wednesday in advance of expected inclement weather, was called after six innings due to darkness
After John Jay (1-6) jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the first, Manhattanville (2-1) responded instantly in the bottom half of the inning, with the first three runners each reaching base safely. Graduate student
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) led off with a double, then advanced to third on a single by Pollack. Gallagher followed with a single to right to score Conklin and put runners at the corners. After Pollack scored on a groundout by freshman
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay), sophomore
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) doubled to left-center, scoring Gallagher.
After a pair of 1-2-3 frames in both the top and bottom of the second inning, the Bloodhounds tied the game in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from William De la Cruz.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Valiants loaded the bases with one out on base hits by Gallagher and Matero, and a Iannarilli hit by pitch. Sophomore
Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) then knocked a potential inning-ending double play ball to John Jay second baseman Sean Napier, but Napier's throw to second base ended up in left field; Gallagher and Matero both scored on the play and Iannarilli wound up at third base. Iannarilli later scored on a groundout by sophomore
Justin Ramos (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck).
In the top of the fourth, with the bases loaded and one out, sophomore pitcher
Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) came on in relief and struck out Ryan Osborne and Brian Garcia, the latter of whom looking, stopping a potential rally.
The Valiants used their speed to tack on a run in the bottom of the fourth. With two out and nobody on, Pollack and Gallagher (again) strung together base hits. With Matero at the plate, the seniors pulled off a double steal, and a Robert Moncino throwing error allowed Pollack to score.
The Bloodhounds pushed a run across in the top of the fifth on a pair of singles and a pair of runner-advancing groundouts, but sophomore
Danny Meduri (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) threw a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, earning his first career save.
The Valiants are back in action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in non-conference road action against Johns Hopkins University.
