PURCHASE, NY – Eight different Valiants recorded an RBI in a balanced offensive effort for the Manhattanville College baseball team Wednesday afternoon in an 8-2 non-conference win over the College of Staten Island Dolphins.
Manhattanville (8-11) pounded out 14 hits, with its starting 1-6 batters finishing a combined 10-for-26 from the plate. Sophomore
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led all players with three hits, while junior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and sophomore
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) added two hits apiece. Junior
Francisco Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) earned the win with five strong innings, including a pair of 1-2-3 frames, allowing just one run. Sean Becker, Frank Muzzio and Jett Nouvertne finished with two hits each for Staten Island (8-10).
Manhattanville took a 1-0 lead in the second when senior
Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Elementary) dropped a double just inside the left field line, scoring sophomore
Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham). The Valiants added another run the following inning when Scoggins, who led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly from senior
Austin Pollack (Harrison, N.Y./).
The Dolphins cut the deficit to one in the top of the fifth, but Manhattanville got the run right back in the bottom of the inning. Scoggins drew a walk and
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) followed with a single, sending Scoggins around to third. Merrill followed with a single, plating Scoggins. The Valiants pushed across another run in the sixth when Gallagher, who stole second base after reaching on an error, scored on a Scoggins single to right field.
Manhattanville put the game out of reach with one in the seventh and two more in the eighth while the trio of sophomore
Richie Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland), junior
Rami Masani (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke), and sophomore
Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) allowed just one run and three hits over the final four innings.
The Valiants return to MAC Freedom action on Friday when the team hosts the Wilkes Colonels at Manhattanville Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
