Sophomore Trio Leads Men's Lacrosse to 16-11 MAC Freedom Win Over Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The sophomore trio of Nick Delia (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South), Will Duval (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay), and Gianni Ciffone (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) combined for 19 of 23 total points, leading the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team to a 16-11 road victory over the Wilkes Colonels Saturday afternoon from Schmidt Stadium.

Ciffone and Delia scored five goals each for Manhattanville (7-5, 2-1 MACF) and Duval added three goals and three assists for his second straight six-point game. Sophomore Ty Arnone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) won 19 of the game's 30 faceoffs, the best percentage for the Valiants in a game this season. Nico Lorenzo and Nicholas Ruggiero each recorded a hat trick for Wilkes (6-6, 1-2 MACF).

The teams traded goal for goal in the first quarter with Ciffone, junior Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye), and sophomore T.J. Caccavo (Carlsbad, Calif./San Marcos) answering a goal by Matthew Bush and two goals by John Wink.

Ciffone struck again just 21 seconds into the second quarter, but the Valiants' first lead of the day was short-lived as Ruggiero tied the game just 18 seconds later, and Lorenzo put Wilkes back in front 23 seconds after Ruggiero's equalizer, but Manhattanville would take control from there. The Valiants scored seven unanswered goals in exactly eight minutes, three of them on extra man opportunities, seizing a six goal lead with 3:51 left in the half; Delia scored four times during the spurt, sandwiched around a goal apiece from Ciffone, Duval, and graduate student Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). John Luna scored with 2:07 left, cutting Wilkes' deficit to 11-6 at the half.

Ruggiero scored his second of the game to open the second half, but Duval and Ciffone responded with their second and fourth goals of the game, respectively, regaining Manhattanville's six-goal lead with 4:01 to play in the third.

Lorenzo scored the final goal of the third and first goal of the fourth to trim Wilkes' deficit back down to four, but that was as close as the Colonels got as the sophomore trio each added their final goals of the game, putting the Valiants up 16-9 with 10:01 to play. Bush and Ruggiero added the final two goals of the game for Wilkes.

Manhattanville returns to GoValiants.com Field Wednesday afternoon, as MAC Freedom play continues with a 4:00 p.m. showdown with six-time reigning conference finalist Eastern.
