Softball Rains Down Runs on Delaware Valley in Twinbill Sweep

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Manhattanville College softball team pounded out 24 hits in 12 innings in picking up a second straight MAC Freedom sweep, defeating Delaware Valley University by the scores of 5-2 and 18-0 (5 inn.) on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon at the DVU Softball Field.

Freshman Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) had a game-high four hits for Manhattanville (15-11, 7-3 MAC Freedom), which moved back into a tie for first place in the conference standings with the sweep. The freshman also drove in three runs, one back of the day-high four RBIs of juniors Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer).

Game 1: Manhattanville 5, Delaware Valley 2

Torres hit a three-run homer in the first inning that provided the final margin of victory in game one, as the Valiants pulled out a 5-2 win. In addition to Torres' three RBIs, junior Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and sophomore Sam Jedrey (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada) also drove in runs for Manhattanville as part of a 10-hit attack.

Torres made Delaware Valley pay for a two-out error in the top of the first, working the count full before sending a Jamie Stefani offering over the fence in left for her fifth homer of the year. The visitors added two more runs to the ledger in the third inning on a run-scoring grounder by Jedrey and a Chapelone RBI single.

Stefani plated two runs for DelVal in the bottom of the third with a two-out single, but that was all the home team could get against senior Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster), who allowed only one hit the rest of the way to compete the victory. Feeney scattered four hits and striking out six in seven innings to improve to 9-6 on the year.

Game 2: Manhattanville 18, Delaware Valley 0 (5 inn.)

All nine Valiants had one hit and eight crossed the plate at least once in just the first three innings of game two, as the Valiants scored early and often in a 18-0 win.

In all, 12 different Valiants had a hit over the five innings, led by Casillas with two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Hartenstein homered and drove in a team-leading four runs, while freshman Brooke Franson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) also scored three times from the bottom of the order.

The 18 runs are the most by a Valiant side since putting up 20 in a 20-4 win versus the College of Mount Saint Vincent on April 6, 2016, while the 18-run margin of victory is the largest for the Valiants since a 19-0 win over Delaware Valley on April 17, 2014.

The Valiants again capitalized on Aggie fielding miscues in the first inning, scoring four unearned runs. After an two-out error scored senior Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) with the first run, Torres singled to extend the inning and Hartenstein hit a three-run homer - her team-best sixth of the year - to put the visitors up by four after half an inning.

Two more unearned runs scored in the second on a misplayed fly ball off the bat of Casillas and an RBI double by graduate student Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge), and the floodgates opened in the third with five more runs coming across. Chapelone doubled and Casillas singled to plate the first two runs, while Hartenstein was issued a walk with the bases loaded to finish off the frame.

Seven more runs came across in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by sophomore Melina Strano (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and a two-run single from Casillas.

Hartenstein was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught, tossing her second straight shutout by allowing only two hits and striking out nine in five innings.

Manhattanville will continue its 10-game road swing on Wednesday with two games at Mount St. Mary College beginning at 3 p.m.
