Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) broke a 33-year-old program record for the Manhattanville College baseball team in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Misericordia Saturday afternoon. The Valiants fell 8-4 in the opener and 11-2 in the MAC Freedom series finale.
Conklin walked three times on the afternoon, giving him 95 for his Valiant career, one more than the mark set by Frank Marinaccio in 1985. Junior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and freshman
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) both had two RBI's on the day for Manhattanville (11-15, 7-8 MACF). Santo Guinta finished the day with four runs, four hits, and eight RBI's for Misericordia (22-10, 14-4 MACF).
GAME ONE: Misericordia 8, Manhattanville 4
The Valiants grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when freshman
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) singled in senior
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic), who had reached on an error. Senior right-hander
Billy Tempone (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) retired the first seven Misericordia batters before allowing a one0out double in the third to Sean Boylan, who later scored on a Kenny Jarema single to tie the game.
With two out and runners on second and third in the fourth, Boylan hit a pop fly to short left field that fell after being lost in the sun, scoring both runners, putting the Cougars up 3-1. After the visitors added a run in the fifth, Scoggins singled home Conklin in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Valiants back within two.
With the bases loaded and no one out in the top of the seventh, Guinta launched a grand slam over the left field fence, putting Misericordia up by six. The Valiants scored twice with two out in the bottom of the inning via a Conklin RBI single and Scoggins RBI double, but Kyle Melahn closed down the win for the Cougars.
GAME TWO: Misericordia 11, Manhattanville 2
The Cougars took control early with four runs in both the first and second innings; Guinta had three RBI's over the two frames while Steve Weisensee added a pair of RBI doubles. The Cougars added a run in the third and fourth innings.
Matero drove in Conklin with a sacrifice fly in the first and freshman
Matthew Careccia (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) with a single in the third, but that was all Misericordia allowed.as Dan Zurowski and James Magaldi allowed just three baserunners while striking out three over the final three innings.
The Valiants continue MAC Freedom play tomorrow at Manhattanville Field with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch against King's (Pa.).
