PURCHASE, NY – Down 9-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Manhattanville College baseball team put together four straight multi-run innings, capped by a three-run ninth, as the Valiants and Mount St. Mary College Knights played to a 9-9 tie Tuesday afternoon at Manhattanville Field,
The program's last tie occurred almost eight years ago to the day, a 16-16 affair with Cortland on April 25, 2010.
Junior
Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) finished with a team-high two hits and two runs scored, including the game-tying run in the ninth for Manhattanville (12-15-1). Corrigan's classmate
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) reached base in all five of his plate appearances, including three walks and a hit by pitch. Junior
Rami Masani (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke), senior
William Mohr (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands), and sophomore
Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) threw a scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth inning, respectively, as the offense worked its way back into the game. Steven Bauer finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's for Mount St. Mary (21-8-1).
The game remained scoreless into the fourth inning, when the Knights took a 2-0 lead via a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. Bauer made it 4-0 in the fifth on a single that scored two runs, the second scoring after a mishandle in the outfield. The Knights first six batters all reached safely in the sixth, as the visitors added five more to grab a 9-0 lead.
From there, the Valiant offense went to work, as freshman
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) followed Scoggins' HBP to start the Manhattanville sixth. After a fly out, sophomore
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) drove in Scoggins with his team-best 33
rd RBI of the season. The Valiants added another run in the inning when junior
Michael Poggioreale (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) plated Matero with two out.
Graduate student
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland), freshman
Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell), and Scoggins all reached on two errors and a walk to load the bases with no one out in the seventh. Matero and classmate
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) followed with an RBI groundout and sacrifice fly, as the Valiants closed to 9-4.
Corrigan singled and Poggioreale walked to open the eighth, both later advancing a base on a passed ball. With one out, Corrigan scored when freshman
Matthew Careccia (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) reached on an error, and Scoggins singled in Poggioreale two batters later, making it 9-6 through eight.
Two hit batsmen sandwiched around two walks to open the ninth forced home a run and put the winning run on first base with nobody out. Sophomore
Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed with a sacrifice fly, driving in Iannarilli and moving Corrigan to third base. Michael DiGiovanni then uncorked a wild pitch that brought in Corrigan and moved junior pinch-runner
Matt Coleman (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) down to second base, but sophomore Joe Silvestri followed with a line out to second base, and Coleman was doubled off.
A brief discussion between the umpires and coaches ended with the game being called due to approaching darkness. The Valiants are back in action on Thursday against the College of Mount Saint Vincent. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. from Manhattanville Field.
