Martin Earns 400th Career Win as Softball Shuts Out Mount St. Vincent

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and freshman Jasmine Feliciano (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) combined to allow only five hits in 14 innings to give head coach Dale Martin his 400th career victory as the Manhattanville College softball team swept the College of Mount St. Vincent, 1-0 and 8-0 (5 inn.), in non-conference action on Friday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.

Martin picked up his 400th career victory in the first game of the day and ended the afternoon with a career record of 401-323, 302 of which have come in 12 seasons at Manhattanville. Feeney also made some history in the win, taking sole possession of first place on the school's career shutout list with her 24th clean sheet.

Game 1: Manhattanville 1, Mount St. Vincent 0

The first game of the day was a classic pitchers' duel between Feeney and CMSV's Rachel Heizer, but one mistake to Manhattanville freshman Brooke Franson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) made the difference as the Valiants eked out a 1-0 win.

The two starters allowed only three hits apiece over the first four frames to keep both teams off the scoreboard. The Dolphins had their best chance in the fourth with a runner on third and two outs, but senior rightfielder Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) was able to throw out Taylor Milata at first base on a ball to the outfield to end the threat.

Heizer got the first two outs of the fifth before her one mistake, which Franson took over the centerfield fence for her third homer of the year and the only run of the afternoon.

Feeney retired the Dolphins in order in the fifth and sixth before working around a leadoff single in the seventh to pick up her record-breaking shutout. The senior scattered only four singles in the victory, her fourth clean sheet of the year.

Game 2: Manhattanville 8, Mount St. Vincent 0 (5 inn.)

The Valiants provided much more offense in the second game, but Feliciano did not need any of it as she picked up her first collegiate victory. The freshman had an excellent outing against the Dolphins, allowing just one hit and striking out one in the win.

Manhattanville managed only five hits as a team, but two of them left the yard off the bats of Ventarola and sophomore Sam Jedrey (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada). Ventarola finished the game 1-for-3 with three runs batted in and Jedrey drove in a pair, while freshman Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) and graduate student Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) each scored twice.

After a scoreless first, the Valiants opened the scoring in the second when Diemicke reached on an error, stole third base and came home on a wild pitch. The Valiants added four more in the third on two-run homers from Ventarola and Jedrey.

The Dolphins had their only threat against Feliciano in the third, when a single and error eventually led to a pair of runners in scoring position with one out, but the freshman induced a groundout and a pop-up to escape the jam.

Manhattanville will continue its very busy weekend tomorrow afternoon, as the Valiants celebrate Senior Day before hosting Eastern University in the MAC Freedom finale beginning at 1 p.m. at Manhattanville Field.
