PURCHASE, N.Y. – Behind record-setting performances by seniors
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) and
Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team sent off its seniors with a decisive 27-14 victory over Delaware Valley University on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Nance and Weiss combined to shatter multiple records in the final game of their Valiant careers. Nance scored a school-record 11 goals to surpass the previous single-game mark of 10, and added two assists to tie the previous single-game points record with 13. Weiss tied the previous school record with 10 goals and chipped in four helpers to surpass Nance and break the school single-season points record first set by Katie Frattarola '02 in 1999.
In addition, with her sixth point of the game Weiss broke Manhattanville's single-season points record, set in 2002 by Liz McNamee '02. The senior finished the game and season with a school-record 98 points, while her 70 goals are second-most in a season in school history and her 28 assists rank fifth.
The senior tandem combined to score the team's first nine goals of the afternoon, as the Valiants built up a 9-6 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening half. Freshman
Melissa O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was the third Valiant to crack the scoresheet with 8:41 to go, while senior
Christina Leva (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) also found the net in the first half for the home team, which went into the break with a 14-9 lead after Nance and Weiss both scored in the final 36 seconds of the half.
The second stanza began in a similar fashion for Manhattanville, as Nance scored in the opening minute and Weiss added two goals in 38 seconds to built up a 17-9 advantage. Freshman
Rosie DeBellis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) got in on the scoring action early in the second half as well, giving her a goal to go with her season-high five assists.
Nance recorded her record-setting 11th goal of the game with 3:15 remaining in the contest, taking a feed from Weiss for her program-record 14th point of the afternoon. Leva finished off the scoring in the final minute with her second of the afternoon from O'Mara.
Sophomore
Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) made 14 saves between the pipes to pick up her seventh win of the season, as the Valiants outshot the Aggies by a 51-32 margin.
Unfortunately for the Valiants, the victory was not enough to reach the MAC Freedom Tournament, as King's (Pa.) College's 18-12 win over Eastern University made Manhattanville the odd-team-out in a three-way tie for third place.
Saturday's game marks the final collegiate contest for the Valiants' seven seniors: Leva, Nance, Weiss,
Shaniya Jones (Naugatuck, Conn./Chase Collegiate School),
Jennifer Machin (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy),
Alyssa Scanga (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and
Katie Zambrotta (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon).
