PURCHASE, NY – The Manhattanville College baseball team split a Senior Day MAC Freedom doubleheader with Delaware Valley on Sunday, taking Game 1 6-1 behind a dominant performance from senior
Billy Tempone (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) before dropping Game 2 5-0, missing out on an opportunity to clinch a seventh straight MAC Freedom Tournament berth.
Between the games, the nine graduating members of the team were honored on Senior Day: Tempone,
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic),
Anthony LoFaro (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest),
Jorge Castro (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders),
Thomas Contrelli (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place),
Pat Badia (Somers, N.Y./Somers),
Antonio Ogando (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic),
William Mohr (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands), and
Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Elementary).
Game 1: Manhattanville 6, Delaware Valley 1:
Tempone turned in perhaps his best performance as a Valiant, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning while the Manhattanville (16-17-1, 11-10 MACF) offense provided more than enough run support.
After sophomore
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), graduate student
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland), and junior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) loaded the bases with nobody out to start the first inning for Manhattanville, freshman
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) grounded into a run-scoring double play, leaving just Conklin at third with two outs. Fellow freshman
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) stepped up with an RBI single, scoring Conklin, and sophomore
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) followed with an RBI double, scoring Shaffer.
As Tempone continued to stifle any Delaware Valley (10-21, 5-14 MACF) offense, the Valiants pushed a run across in the third when Iannarilli knocked in Scoggins on a fielder's choice and another run in the fourth when Lynch singled home Campana.
In the sixth, the Aggies put together their only threat of the game, as back-to-back two-out walks and a single to right field ended the no-hitter and shutout for Tempone. After another walk loaded the bases, sophomore
Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) came on and induced an inning-ending flyout on his first pitch.
Proteau retired the Aggies in order, including two strikeouts, in the seventh to close out the game.
Shaffer finished 3-for-3 with two RBI's while Scoggins added three hits and scored two runs. Sophomore Iannarilli and Campana added two hits each as well.
Game 2: Delaware Valley 5, Manhattanville 0
Kevin Crill tripled down the right field line and later scored on Joey Lodato's single for Delaware Valley in the second. After Lodato stole second, Jeremy Stewart singled him in, giving Delaware Valley a 2-0 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but Delaware Valley added to its lead with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Delaware Valley left-hander Sean McFadden held Manhattanville's offense, averaging 10 hits a game coming in, to a first inning single to Lynch and third inning double to Scoggins. Scoggins was the only Valiant to reach third base during the game.
Needing a sweep to clinch the fourth and final spot in the conference tournament, Manhattanville now needs Delaware Valley to beat King's (Pa.) tomorrow afternoon or the Monarchs will be the #4 seed. The Valiants wrap up the 2018 regular season on Wednesday against Eastern Connecticut State University. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
