ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) tossed all 11 innings in the circle and then delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th as third-seeded Manhattanville College outlasted second-seeded Ramapo College of New Jersey, 3-2, in game five of the Ithaca, New York Regional of the NCAA Div. III Softball Championships, held at Ithaca College's Doris Kostrinsky Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Manhattanville (26-15) advances into the regional championship round, where the team will need to beat top-seeded and NFCA #21 Ithaca twice tomorrow to claim the regional title. Game one is scheduled for noon.
The Valiants did not fare particularly well at the plate on the day, managing five hits over the first five innings and none over the final six. Yet that was still enough to get the win, thanks to a tremendous effort in the circle from Hartenstein (10-7), who conceded only two unearned runs and nine hits in 11 full frames, which ties for second on the school's single-game innings-pitched list.
After more than 2:30 of action, Manhattanville broke through for the first time since the third inning in the 11th to win. Graduate student
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) reached to start the inning thanks to a throwing error, then took second on a passed ball before sophomore
Sam Jedrey (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada) successfully sacrificed her to third. With the winning run a base away, Hartenstein made herself a winner by lifting a fly to left-center that was deep enough to score Diemicke.
Diemicke opened the scoring more than 150 minutes earlier in the bottom of the first, plating freshman
Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) after the outfielder led off with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester).
Manhattanville staged another two-out rally in the third, when Ventarola's speed forced an errant throw on an infield grounder and junior
Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) quickly drove her home with a double over the head of the rightfielder.
Ramapo (26-14) countered with a two-out strike of its own in the top of the fourth, when Nicole Hernandez came up with the bases loaded and poked a two-run single up the middle to tie the score at two.
The Roadrunners attempted another two-out rally in the sixth after a pair of singles put runners on the corners with two down, but Hartenstein got a called third strike to end the threat and keep the game tied. Hartenstein also stranded the go-ahead runner at third in the seventh, inducing a grounder to third to end the frame.
Hartenstein made a stellar play to keep the game tied in the 10th frame, as she somehow snagged a liner ticketed for center field off the bat of Christina Brizek that would have given Ramapo the lead. In all, Hartenstein stranded 10 Roadrunners on base in the 11 innings, including four in extra frames.
