Volleyball 7-1 for First Time Since 1988 with Straight-Set Win Over Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA. – Senior Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) had a match-high 11 kills, freshman Sarah Camarena (Los Angeles, Calif./Sacred Heart (H.S.)) had nine assists and 10 digs and sophomore Rosie DeBellis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) had a match-best 11 assists as the Manhattanville College volleyball team swept the Immaculata University Mighty Macs (25-20, 25-14, 25-17) Friday, Sept. 14, at Alumnae Hall.

With the score tied at five in the first set, the Valiants (7-1) reeled off four straight points to take a comfortable lead. Manhattanville's lead fluctuated between two and four points until Immaculata (2-4) took seven of 10 points, turning a 16-12 Manhattanville advantage into a 19-19 tie. Manhattanville countered with a run of its own, taking six of seven points to grab the opening set.

The second start started off much like the first, as the two teams split the opening eight points, but Manhattanville took 16 of the next 21 points, opening a 20-9 lead and forcing an Immaculata timeout. The timeout was to no avail as the Valiants outscored the Mighty Macs 5-4 out of the timeout for a 2-0 match advantage.

Immaculata took the first two points of the third set, but Manhattanville responded with 10 of 13 points for a 10-5 lead. Immaculata took the subsequent three points, but that was as close as it got, as three kills and a block from LiVolsi highlighted a 7-1 Manhattanville run and 17-9 edge. Immaculata closed to five points on four separate occasions, but a kill and service ace from junior Austen Brauer (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) closed out the set and match. The victory gave the team its first 7-1 start since 1988.

The Valiants return to Kennedy Gymnasium and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play Tuesday night, Sept. 18, at 7:00 p.m. against the King's College (Pa.) Monarchs.
