PATCHOGUE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles Saturday, Sept. 8, in the opening game of a two-day tournament hosted by the Golden Eagles at Danzi Stadium.
Manhattanville (2-0) caught a bit of luck early on when Damien Duda's shot hit the post in the sixth minute, one of three shots the forward took for St. Joseph's (0-3) in the opening 11 minutes.
After three corner kicks and two blocked shots in the span of 1:35, Manhattanville struck in the 18th minute when freshman
Cody LaCava (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) delivered a cross into the 18-yard box that sophomore
Pablo Bravo Olle (Barcelona, Spain/LFG Bon Soleil) one-timed in past Golden Eagles' keeper Tyler Flaherty.
In the second half, Flaherty denied senior
Jack Balasiano (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) in the 49th minute and freshman
Nick Williams (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) in the 71st minute, preventing the Valiants from adding an insurance goal. In the 90th minute, off a corner kick, Manhattanville freshman keeper
Charles Roberts (Brown Mills, N.J./Pemberton Township) stopped a header from the Golden Eagles' Vincent Raccuglia to preserve his second shutout win in his first three collegiate starts.
The Valiants wrap up their season-opening four-match road trip tomorrow, Sept. 9, against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. Manhattanville returns to GoValiants.com Field Wednesday, Sept. 12 against the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels at 7 p.m.
