Women's Hockey Ends Scoring Drought in 5-2 Win Over Trinity

RYE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) scored a pair of goals, leading a scoring onslaught for the Manhattanville College women's hockey team in a 5-2 win over the Trinity College Bantams Tuesday, Jan. 15 from Playland Ice Casino.

Lopes scored the game's first and last goals for Manhattanville (10-5-2), who snapped three-game losing and scoreless streaks in impressive fashion, tallying its biggest goal total in the team's last 10 games. Senior Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Northwood School) and junior Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery) each added a goal and an assist and fellow senior Morgan Wilm (West Chester, Pa./Millbrook School) added a key insurance goal in the third period. Caelin Flaherty had both goals for Trinity (7-5-1), each coming shorthanded.

Lopes showed impressive speed and puck handling on the game's opening goal, carrying the puck in from her own blue line, skating through and around the Bantams defense before picking the top right corner for her seventh goal of the season at 12:11 of the opening period, the lone goal in the first 20 minutes. The score remained 1-0 through nearly the entire second period before Flaherty knotted things up at 18:58.
The Valiants didn't waist much time grabbing the lead back in the third period. Sabia scored off a rebound of her own shot, beating Trinity goalie Kai-Lilly Karpman at 3:19. After a scoreless 9+ minutes, a textbook outlet pass from junior Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride (JWHL)) to Mensi led to a breakway goal at 13:05.

Flaherty cut the lead back to one, 3-2, with her second of the night at 15:41, but Wilm scored on a well-placed wrist shot off an assist from Mensi on the power play at 17:03. After going on the power play at 17:24, Trinity pulled Karpman for a 6-on-4, but Lopes made the Bantams pay with her second of the night with a wrist shot from her own blue line at 18:14. Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Man./Canadian International Hockey Academy) stopped 20 of 22 shots for the Valiants to move to 3-0 on the season as the Valiants earned just their second win in seven games all-time against the Bantams.

Manhattanville will end the regular season with eight straight United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) games, beginning this weekend. The William Smith College Herons come to Playland for a two-game UCHC series, beginning Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
