Women's Hockey Plays to Tie with Endicott

RUTLAND, VT. — In the first round of the WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team played to a 1-1 tie with Endicott College Saturday, Jan. 5.

The Valiants would get on the board first in the final minutes of an evenly played first period. Following a turnover forced by the Valiants, sophomore Adelle Clark (Lantzville, B.C./Ontario Hockey Academy) fired a shot from the slot that beat Endicott goaltender Vendela Jonsson to give Manhattanville a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Endicott would draw even late in the second period, when Caroline Hughes scored an unassisted goal to tie the score at one heading into the third.

Both teams had many opportunities to take the lead in the third period, including multiple posts being hit, but neither team was able to find the winning goal. In the five-minute overtime period, both teams had one shot apiece, but were again unable to find the game winner, resulting in the game officially being a tie.

As part of the tournament rules, a shootout took place to determine who would go to the championship round. Endicott would come out on top of the three-round shootout, winning by a score of 1-0.

The Valiants' penalty killing continued to be a strength for the team, as Manhattanville went three-for-three when down a player and improved to 89.4 percent on the season. The team went 26-for-42 in the faceoff circle on the day, and senior goaltender Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) made 21 saves.

The Valiants return to action in the tournament tomorrow afternoon when they take on Castleton University, with puck drop scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
