PURCHASE, N.Y. — Playing in their first home game in over a month, the Manhattanville College men's basketball team picked up their first conference win of the season, defeating King's College (Pa.) 80-65 Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Kennedy Gym.
For the Valiants (7-7, 1-2 MACF), junior
JoJo Cobbs (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Manhattanville had five players score in double figures, and the team got contributions throughout the lineup in the wire-to-wire victory.
The Valiants started the game on an 8-0 run, with senior
Mike Ryan (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) scoring the team's first five points. The Monarchs (7-7, 1-2 MACF) would cut the lead to five midway through the first half, but Manhattanville would then respond with a 14-1 run to stretch it's lead to 29-11 with six minutes remaining in the half. The home team would gradually increase their lead throughout the final minutes of the period, capped off by a 35-foot three pointer from freshman
Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) at the buzzer to give the team a 50-22 lead at the half.
King's came out strong to start the second half, going on a 13-3 run to cut the deficit to 18 points, but the Valiants then responded with a 12-2 run of their own to take control of the game. The Monarchs were able to cut the lead to 13, but that is the closest they would get as the Valiants would come away with an impressive conference win.
Freshman
Connor Yetman (Sydney, Australia/The Scots College (H.S.)) had 10 points and eight rebounds on the night, and sophomore
Sean Smith, Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart) had 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals in 22 minutes. The Valiants picked up their third victory in their last four games, and 11 different players scored for Manhattanville.
The Valiants return to the court Saturday, Jan. 12, when they continue conference play at Misericordia University with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
