NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Entering the night with an unblemished record in Skyline Conference play, the Manhattanville College women's soccer squad suffered its first conference defeat of the season earlier today, Saturday, Oct. 19, on the road to Mount Saint Mary College by a score of 3-0.
The Valiants (8-7, 6-1 Skyline) and Knights (6-8, 6-0 Skyline) played to a dead even draw in the first half of the contest, with Manhattanville holding the advantage in shots on net 3-1. Sophomore forward
Amaya Gonzalez (Buena Park, Calif./Western) attempted all three on-target shots for the Crimson and White in the first 45:00, but all were stopped by Mt. St. Mary keeper Cyan Scott.
Early in the second half, however, the Valiants were called for a foul inside the box in front of their own net and the Knights were awarded a penalty kick, converted on by Chrissy Cannella of Mt. St. Mary to make it 1-0 in favor of the home team in the 48th. Cannella scored the second of the game in the 62nd off a free kick following another Valiant foul and closed it out with a hat-trick in the 74th as she converted off a pass from a corner.
Manhattanville sophomore goalkeeper
Alexa Pyatsky (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) made three saves on the night.
With the Valiants' loss, Manhattanville, Mount Saint Mary and Sarah Lawrence College are now all knotted in a three-way tie for first place in the Skyline standings with 18 points. The Valiants return to play at home this Tuesday, Oct. 22, for Senior Night as conference foe St. Joseph's College-Long Island visits Purchase, N.Y. Kickoff at GoValiants.com Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Manhattanville holds the 10-3-1 all-time lead over the Golden Eagles, but the two programs have not met since 2006, the Valiants last season as members of the Skyline.
