Early Goal Stifles Women's Soccer 1-0 at Sarah Lawrence

YONKERS, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College women's soccer team, thanks to a strong performance from the opposition's keeper, suffered a 1-0 loss on the road Saturday night, Oct. 26, at Skyline Conference foe Sarah Lawrence College at Fleming Stadium.

The Valiants (9-8, 7-2 Skyline) outplayed the hosting Gryphons (13-4, 8-2 Skyline) all night long, and finished with the 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. However, on the game's second shot attempt, a header to the left side of the net off a Sarah Lawrence corner kick, the home team was able to sneak a score past Valiant keeper sophomore Alexa Pyatsky (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) in the eight minute.

Overall, freshman Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy) and junior Ashley Pacheco (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Pelham Prep) dominated the ball all night long, taking four shots on net apiece, while the rooke Aracena also attempted four more shots that did not land on target for a game-high eight attempts. The Crimson and White outdid Sarah Lawrence 5-3 in shots on goal in the first half, as Pyatsky made two saves. Manhattanvlle took all five of the on-target shot attempts in the second half, as they controled the ball throughout, but all were stopped by Gryphon keeper Emily Cornejo, who finished with 10 saves and the shutout.

With the win, Sarah Lawrence moves into first place in the conference standings with 24 points, while Farmingdale State College and Mount Saint Mary College are knotted at second with 22 points. The Valiants are now in fourth with 21 points. Manhattanville returns to the pitch at home in their regular-season finale and faces Farmingdale in a major battle for postseason seeding on Wednesday, Oct. 30. The Rams and Valiants kickoff at GoValiants.com Field at 4:00 p.m., with Manhattanville owning an 8-7-2 edge in the all-time series, though the two haven't met since 2014.
