PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team used a very clean contest at the net Monday night, Oct. 7, to pick up a 3-0 straight-set victory (25=15, 25-9, 25-11) over Skyline Conference opponent Maritime College at home at Kennedy Gymnasium.
With the win, Manhattanville (13-5, 4-0 Skyline) remains unbeaten in conference play – one of just three teams – while the Privateers (3-16, 1-5 Skyline) dropped their eighth-straight. As a team, the Crimson and White notched 46 kills on 89 swings with just 11 errors for an effective .393 hitting percentage.
Leading the way offensively was senior
Austen Brauer (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings), who had a match-best 11 kills on 18 swings with just three errors for a .444 hitting percentage. She added a career- and match-high six aces as well. Reigning Skyline Rookie of the Week
Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro) dominated once again and led all players with 33 assists and 15 digs. She added seven kills on 10 swings and no errors (.700) as well as five aces.
Sophomore
Emma Dronzek (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart) was also strong throughout the match, totaling six kills on nine swings with two errors (.444). Freshman
Felicity Hoffert (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) put in a successful performance and finished with three digs and a .333 hitting percentage (six kills, one error, 15 swings). Her classmate Hannah Pena registered five kills on nine swings (two errors) to hit .333 as well. Also prominently featured was rookie libero
Geena Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush). She finished with 10 digs, seven assists and a pair of aces.
The victory was a strong rebound for the Valiants, who recently lost at Montclair State University following a 10-match winning streak. Manhattanville will look to use it as momentum heading into its toughest Skyline test yet at home this Wednesday night, Oct. 9, when the United States Merchant Marine Academy comes to Purchase. The Mariners and Valiants are both perfect in conference play and are each 13-5 overall. USMMA leads the all-time series 21-8, but Manhattanville has won two of the last three meetings.
