Sabia's Game Winner Lifts Women's Hockey Over Stevenson in Overtime

RYE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College women's hockey team picked up its second win of the weekend on Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Playland Ice Casino. The team earned a 2-1 victory over United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opponent Stevenson University thanks to an overtime game winner from senior forward Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery)

The first period did not see any goals as both teams battled back and forth. Manhattanville (2-1-1, 2-0-0 UCHC) held a 9-4 advantage in shots in a period that passed by quickly. Play flowed back and forth with neither team gaining an edge and the lack of stoppages helped the period pass by in just over 20 minutes.

The first goal came three minutes into the second period when Stevenson (1-2-1, 0-2-0 UCHC) found the back of the net. Stevenson's Nikki Kendrick scooped up the loose puck off a blocked shot and was able to notch the game's first goal. Unable to score a goal of their own in the second period, the Valiants found themselves trailing by a goal headed into the third period.

The Crimson and White were in complete control in the third period of play. They outshot the Mustangs 15-7 and earned their first powerplay of the game. Their game-tying goal came on the powerplay when Sabia fired a puck into the net on a goal assisted by junior forward Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) and senior defender Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride (JWHL)). The goal came halfway through the period and the 1-1 score line held until the buzzer sounded to end the final period of regulation.

Overtime was ended quickly by the Sabia-goal which came just 1:15 into the five-minute period. Sabia broke away from the Stevenson defense slipped the puck past the Mustangs' goalie on a play assisted by senior forward Brayden James (Denton, Texas/Dallas Stars Elite (EHL)) and Pellowitz. The game ended with a final score of 2-1 and senior goaltender Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Man./Canadian International Hockey Academy) made 21 saves on 22 shots in the winning effort.

Manhattanville returns to action this upcoming Friday, Nov. 15, against Neumann University. The Valiants are once again at home at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, N.Y. for a 7:00 P.M. puck drop.
