PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team won their first Skyline Conference game of the season today, Nov. 19. The Crimson and White had a large 96-42 win over Yeshiva University. Twenty-four of the points scored by the Valiants were three-pointers, lead by junior
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and freshman
Julia Torreso (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) who each made three.
After freshman
Madison Fields (Grantsville, Utah/Grantsville) won the tip, Shore started the game off with a jump shot that was assisted by junior
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East). The Maccabees (1-2, 0-1 Skyline) quickly responded with a layup to match the Valiants (2-0, 1-0 Skyline). After Yeshiva scored its second basket, Manhattanville went on a 10-point scoring spree. Coutu made a free throw and a jumper, freshman
Olivia Kelley (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) made two layups and Shore sunk a three. Also during that sequence, Fields grabbed three rebounds and had one assist.
The Valiants started the second quarter up by 18 and didn't let off the gas. Shore and Fields each made a layup before the Maccabees scored their 10th point of the game. Following Yeshiva's jumper, sophomore
Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) had back-to-back layups and increased the Valiants to 24. Towards the end of the quarter, Shore stole a pass from Yeshiva, dribbled down and dished the ball off to sophomore
Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), who went up for a layup to make the score 45-12 in Manhattanville's favor before the start of the second half.
Shore made two back-to-back threes in the beginning of the third, driving the lead up to 33 points. Coutu then intercepted a pass and made a fast break layup to make the score 54-19. She repeated that same sequence two more times. She then made a fourth steal but assisted Kelley on a fast break layup. Junior
Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) had three rebounds and a layup in the third. Manhattanville's defense only gave up nine points in the entire quarter.
Freshman
Cierra Simmons (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) swished a jumper in the beginning seconds of the fourth quarter. The Maccabees then responded with seven unanswered points, three of which were foul shots. Freshman
Jamie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) was able to get Manhattanville back on the board after freshman
London Scott (Farmers Branch, Texas/Newman Smith) assisted her on a layup. Toresso checked into the game for eight minutes and scored 11 points while on the court. She went 3-of-4 from three and added a layup. Mikaele lead the Valiants in rebounds with seven as Fields and Pemberton followed with six each. Meanwhile, Coutu was the leader in points (22) and steals (5).
Manhattanville will go on the road for the first time this season and visit Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y., on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1:00 p.m.
