Box Score HARTFORD, CONN. -- The Manhattanville College women's hockey team had their three-game win streak snapped by Trinity College on Tuesday, Nov. 19. The Valiants fell to the Bantams by a score of 3-2. Junior forward Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) tallied both goals in the loss.
Manhattanville (3-2-1, 3-0 UCHC) struck first when Lopes found the back of the net midway through the first period. She was assisted by senior forward Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery). The Valiants were able to maintain the one goal lead for the rest of the period and despite being outshot 13-7 they led at the first intermission.
The lead did not last long into the second period of play. Trinity (2-1) evened the game four minutes after the puck dropped. Both teams continued to battle back and forth in what was an intense second period. The second saw six total penalties. Four for the Bantams and two for the Valiants. Neither team could gain an advantage and the score was tied 1-1 at the second intermission.
The third period saw a flurry of offense. Trinity quickly scored on the powerplay less than three minutes into the period and then ten minutes later they scored again to make the score 3-1 with just under eight minutes left to play in the game. The Valiants continued to fight and with three minutes left to play Lopes found the back of the net on a powerplay goal assisted by Sabia and senior forward Janet Xu (Edmonton, Alta./Ontario Hockey Academy). Unfortunately, the last-ditch effort was not enough and Manhattanville lost for the second time this season in a tight 3-2 game. Freshman goalie Lena Flores (Chicago, Ill./Guerin College Prep) made 35 saves on 38 shots despite the loss.
The Valiants return to action this Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 P.M. They travel to Annville, Pa., to take on United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opponent Lebanon Valley College. The team will look to improve on its undefeated conference record and extend their win streak to seven games over the Dutchmen.
