RYE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College men's hockey team defeated United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opponent Chatham University on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Playland Ice Casino. The Valiants were led by two goals from freshman forward Glynn Robitaille (Northville, Mich./Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) in the 6-3 win.
Manhattanville (3-4-1, 2-4 UCHC) only trailed once in the game and it was only after Chatham (1-7, 1-4 UCHC) opened scoring in the first period with a goal five minutes into the period. The Valiants tied the game up with a goal from freshman forward Jack McDonough (Princeton, N.J./New Jersey 87s (EHL)) eight minutes later. Both times would enter the first intermission tied at one goal apiece. Manhattanville dominated most of the period and outshot the Cougars 11-6.
Scoring began to open up for the Valiants in the second period. They took the lead midway through the period thanks to a fantastic effort from junior Braeden Cross who wove through defenders and found the back of the net. Freshman forward Josh Fletcher (Calgary, Alb./Kindersley Klippers (SJHL)) and senior defender Joel Knight (Stoney Creak, Ont./Markham Royals (OJHL)) were credited with the assists. Manhattanville struck again three minutes later when Robitaille scored his first of the afternoon. Chatham scored three seconds before the end of the second to make the score 3-2 after two periods of play.
The Crimson and White did not wait long to extend their lead to two once again. Robitaille scored his second of the game on the powerplay to make the score 4-2. The assist went to freshman forward Nick Prestia (Niagara Falls, Ont./Georgetown Raiders (OJHL)). The two-goal lead stood for 10 minutes of play and then the Cougars found the back of the net on the powerplay to cut the lead to once again. Sophomore forward Alex Rowella (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) then responded with a goal of his own for the Valiants to extend the lead to two. Manhattanville was finally able to put the game away after Fletcher put away the empy-net goal to ice the game.
Manhattanville was able to bounce back after a tough game on Friday, Nov. 22, and split the weekend's games. The team returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26, for a game against Trinity College at 7:30 P.M. in Hartford Conn.
