RYE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College women's hockey team snapped their two-game winning streak after falling to Connecticut College by a score of 2-1 at the Playland Ice Casino on Saturday, Nov. 30. The game went right down to the end and was not decided until there was less than two minutes left in the third period.
Manhattanville (5-2-1, 5-0 UCHC) was first on the board to start the game. Senior forward Brayden James (Denton, Texas/Dallas Stars Elite (EHL)) tallied her first goal of the season on a play assisted by junior forward Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) and senior forward Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery). The one-goal advantage was short-lived and Connecticut (3-3) found the back of the net just two minutes later to tie the game at one. The 1-1 score line held until the end of the first and the teams entered the first intermission tied.
The second period was uneventful. The Camels outshot the Valiants 7-2, but neither team could find the back of the net. Senior goalie Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Man./Canadian International Hockey Academy) stood tall and kept her team in the game. For the second straight period, the score was 1-1 at the intermission.
The game began to ramp up in the third period. Connecticut went on the powerplay twice and was unable to convert with a man advantage and Manhattanville was unsuccessful on their one powerplay opportunity. The teams went back and forth until the Camels finally broke through with only 1:18 left in the game. The Valiants went on the powerplay with one-minute left and pulled Elias, but they could not convert with the 6-4 advantage and Connecticut took home the 2-1 win.
Despite the loss, Elias played well and made 22 saves on 24 shots. Manhattanville struggled on the powerplay throughout the game and went 0-4 and was outshot 24-15 by the Camels.
The Crimson and White return to action a week from today on Saturday, Dec. 7, for a 4:00 P.M. puck drop against Saint Anselm College at home in the Playland Ice Casino.
