Women’s Basketball Wins in Triple Digits over Sarah Lawrence

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team had a triple digit win over Sarah Lawrence College today, Dec. 7. Before today the program has reached above 100 points only six times. The final score against the Gryphons was 103-30 and junior Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) lead Manhattanville in points once again with 20.

This was the first time in 33 years the Valiants scored over 100 points. The 2019-20 team is tied for second in program history for the highest scoring game ever. They tied the 1986 record set against Bard College as the final score read 103-43. The squad is also now second for the highest points margin record with 73. The record is 75 which was set in 1999 over Merchant Marine.

Freshman Madison Fields (Grantsville, Utah/Grantsville) took the tip off for Manhattanville (5-1,3-1) and secured the possession for the team. Junior Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) stole the ball from the Gryphons (0-10,0-5) and dished it off to junior Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) to start the game. Pemberton then sank a breakaway layup. Sophomore Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) followed with a layup before Sarah Lawrence scored their first basket. After the Gryphons made their second bucket, the Valiants score 14 unanswered points and didn't allow them to score for the rest of the quarter. During their run Coutu notched a steal and brought it down for a fast break layup. After that play sophomore Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) checked into the game and received the inbound. She then dribbled past her defender and the rest of the Gryphons and sunk a breakaway layup.

Mikaele started the second off for the Valiants with a layup assisted by Coutu then Coutu hit a three assisted by Mikaele. Following that sequence Jordyn Medina scored the third bucket for the Gryphons. Later in the quarter sophomore Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) made a steal and converted it into a made layup. She brought the score to 35-6 in the Valiants favor. Johnson-Desilvia dished out three assists in the second and Pemberton grabbed three rebounds.

Fields was fouled as she sank her layup in the opening seconds of the third. She then made her granted free-throw to increase the lead margin by 43 points. Following her made free-throw she then stole the ball, dished it off to Coutu who then passed it to Pemberton. Pemberton drove in the paint and made a layup. To close out the third, freshman Olivia Kelley (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) was fouled and made one of her free throws to close the score in the third at 80-23.

Freshman Jamie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) started the fourth quarter and made a two-pointer to start off play and Shore followed with a three. The Valiants had a short six point run before the Gryphons scored. During that sequence freshman Carmen Rosemond (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) made a layup and free throw while freshman Lauren Krystall (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) followed with a three. Sarah Lawrence responded with a layup but didn't score again until the last 25 seconds of the game. The Valiants went on a 12 point scoring spree where freshman Karina Cruz (Kissimmee, Fla./Poinciana), Leah Morawski (Northport, N.Y./Northport), Alana Anderson (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central) and Krystall all added to the score.
