PITTSBURGH, PA – In her 92
nd career game, senior defender
Ellis Smith (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara Junior Purple Eagles (WNYAHL)) scored her first collegiate goal for the Manhattanville College women's hockey team Saturday, Feb. 16, the only goal of the day in a 1-0 win over the Chatham University Cougars in Manhattanville's 2018-19 regular season finale.
Much like it did Friday night, Manhattanville (16-7-2, 12-5-1 UCHC) dominated the game in all non-scoring matters, taking at least 15 shots every period (47 in all), holding Chatham (7-18, 4-14 UCHC) to just 17 shots total. Junior
Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Man./Canadian International Hockey Academy) stopped all 17 Chatham shot, lowering her season goals against average back to an even 1.00 and raising her season save percentage to .945.
Neither team found the back of the net over the opening 40 minutes, despite four power play opportunities for Manhattanville, who managed seven shots total during those man-advantage chances. After Smith scored her tie-breaking goal at 15:14, Manhatanville quickly found itself in a rarely-seen spot, facing a 6-on-3 disadvantage at the 17:59 mark following two penalties and Chatham pulling starting goalie Devon Strachan. However, Manhattanville allowed just one shot during the 39-second duration of the 6-on-3, then just one more shot during the 1:21 duration of the 6-on-4, closing out a second straight shutout.
Winners of seven of its last nine games, Manhattanville will host a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Quarterfinal from Playland Ice Casino next Saturday, Feb. 23. The Valiants' tournament seed and first round opponent are still to be determined.
