Lippa Ties Program Goals Record, Men’s Hockey Tops King’s 5-1 on the Road

WILKES-BARRE, PA. – Five separate Valiants notched goals for the Manhattanville College men's ice hockey team as the squad picked up the four-goal victory, 5-1, on the road over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) foe King's College Friday night, Feb. 8.

Manhattanville (13-7-3, 9-4-3 UCHC) started off the night with a powerplay goal against the Monarchs (1-21, 1-14 UCHC) as senior defenseman Axel Walltott (Stockholm, Sweden/Varmdo HC J20 (SWE)) scored at 11:05 in the first period, assisted by classmate and fellow blueliner Oscar Arfelt (Stockholm, Sweden/Connecticut Oilers (EHL)) and rookie forward Niko Happo (Kauniainen, Finland/Grankulla IFK Hockey Club (FIHA)). That was the only goal in the first 20 minutes as the Valiants took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Overall, though, Manhattanville outplayed King's in every facet of the game and outshot the home team 26-4 in the period.

Success continued for Manhattanville in the second as the road squad scored another three. Senior defenseman Marco Ferraro (Toronto, Ont./St. Michael's Buzzers (OJHL)) kicked off the scoring just 00:36 in on the powerplay – assisted by forwards junior Kenny McLean (New Rochelle, N.Y./New York Bobcats (EHL)) and senior Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ont./Oakville Blades (OJHL)) – to put the Valiants up 2-0. At 10:11, senior co-captain Eric Berglund (Sollentuna, Sweden/Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL)) put Manhattanville up 3-0 with the game's first 5-on-5 goal – assisted again by Lippa and McLean. McLean followed toward the end of the period with a score of his own with both squads at full strength as well – assisted by Berglund and Lippa – and the Valiants took the 4-0 lead. Then, with 00:12 remaining and the Valiants on the powerplay, Ferraro passed to Arfelt, who set up Lippa for the goal to put his team up 5-0. It was the 53rd goal of Lippa's career as a Manhattanville Valiant and the assistant captain is now tied for the program record in goals.

The Monarchs got one goal back at the end of the third period with 00:56 remaining in regulation as the Valiants came away with the 5-1 victory.

Highlights:
- Lippa finished as a +5 for the night and had a total of four points.
- McLean was 11-of-21 in the faceoff circle and finished with three points.
- Senior goalie Tyler Feaver (Whitby, Ont./Whitby Fury (OJHL)) picked up the victory after making 14 saves on 15 shots.

Manhattanville stays in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., tonight and returns to the ice tomorrow evening, Feb. 9, for a 5:00 p.m. game at UCHC-leading Wilkes University. An added layer to the game is that the winner of the contest will be crowned the MAC Men's Hockey Champion.
