Baseball Opens 2019 Season With Two-Game Split Against Manchester

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Manhattanville College baseball team opened the 2019 season with a doubleheader split against the Manchester University Spartans, winning game one 8-5 before dropping game two 14-7.

Sophomore Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) finished the twin-bill six-for-11 with three runs scored while fellow sophomore Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) and junior Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) finished the day a combined nine-for 18 with five RBI's. Senior Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) finished the day five-for-eight with three runs, three RBI's and three walks while classmate Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went two-for-five with two RBI's in Manhattanville's (1-1) game one win.

On the mound, junior Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) allowed just four hits over five scoreless innings while striking out four, earning the game one win. Senior Rami Masani (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) earned the save, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.

GAME ONE: Senior Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) put the Valiants up 1-0 in the top of the third when he singled, stole second, took third on a passed ball, then scored on a single by sophomore Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk). Tebolt helped put the Valiants up 2-0 the following inning when he followed a two-out walk to junior Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) with a double, pushing Merrill to third. Merrill later scored on another passed ball.

Manhattanville added four more, all with two out, in the top of the fifth, the big knock coming from Corrigan, who drove in both Shaffer and Roper with a double to left field. A single by junior Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) single and an RBI double by Scoggins gave the Valiants runs in four straight innings in the top of the sixth and opened the lead to 7-0.

Manchester (1-3) scored five unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh, but a Matero double and Iannarilli RBI single pushed Manhattanville's lead back to three runs in the top of the eighth. Masani kept Manchester off the scoreboard over the final two frames, escaping a bases loaded-one out jam in the ninth to close out the win.

GAME TWO: Manchester's one-through-five hitters all did their fair share of damage at the plate, combining to go nine-for-20 with eight runs scored and eight RBI's. The Spartans led 4-0 after two and 9-1 after four.

Manhattanville got three runs back between the bottom of the fifth and bottom of the seventh, two of those runs driven in by Iannarilli, but Manchester added two in the eighth and three in the ninth, denying any late Manhattanville rally. Scoggins slugged the Valiants' first home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth.

The Valiants' four-game opening weekend continues tomorrow with a 10 a.m. first pitch against the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University.
