NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Playing for the first time in nine days, the Manhattanville College baseball team scored early and often on its way to an 8-2 victory over the Blue Angels from The College of New Rochelle, Tuesday March 12.
Sophomore
Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) went 3-for-3, reached base five times and scored four times to lead the Manhattanville (3-2) offense. Junior
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), fellow junior
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and sophomore
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) all showed patience and good eyes at the plate, reaching base a combined seven times via walk, adding two runs and two RBI's between all three. Sophomore
Christian Cefaloni (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) allowed two runs in 4.2 innings, earning his first collegiate victory, while freshman
Nick Carita (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) and senior
Rami Masani (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) closed out the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Samuel Zambrana Jr. drove in both runs for New Rochelle (0-7).
Manhattanville utilized two walks and two New Rochelle errors to score two runs in a top of the first that saw six straight Valiants reach base. In the top of the second, after freshman
Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) led off with a single and Lynch walked, Roper singled home Viscusi and sent Lynch around to third. After Roper stole second, a wild pitch brought in Lynch and sent Roper to third. Senior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) followed with an RBI groundout. Matero then walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, but was eventually stranded there.
After a quiet top of the third, Roper led off the third with a single, then stole second prior to a Matero hit by pitch. After a passed ball advanced both runners into scoring position, Iannarilli took full advantage of the situation, and drove in both with a single to right center.
After allowing just three hits through the first four innings, Cefaloni conceded a two-run single to Zambrana Jr. in the bottom of the fifth. Roper scored his fourth run of the game in the top of the sixth after singling, advancing to second on a passed ball, stealing third, before coming home on a wile pitch, one of five from New Rochelle during the game.
After Carita retired four straight between the bottom of the fifth and sixth, Masani allowed a lone single in the bottom of the seventh to close out the win.
With Manhattanville Field still feeling the effects of last week's winter storm, the Valiants will "host" the Knights from Mount St. Mary College Wednesday, March 13 at the Purchase College baseball field at 7 p.m.
